Why does a lack of human artifacts in the wilderness lead to a person turning their attention inwardly?
What a lack of human artifacts does to a person is that it denies them anything to identify with. Where in the city you are constantly bombarded with things that catch your eye and take up your attention such as a billboard advertising clothes or a TV commercial, constantly reminding you that you are part of a society and that you need to buy and conform. What this does is deny you quality thought toward your self knowledge. On the other hand what happens when you get out in nature is that while you do see things that grab your attention, they don’t relate to you. For instance you see a giant mountain and its beauty grabs your attention but it doesn’t force you to loose focus on yourself and your condition, it just shows you how small you really are, and that the there is a world outside of “society” which allows you to focus on yourself and how you relate to the bigger picture not just what fashion you are wearing that week.
