Jason Parham, Why we learn better in the emptiness of the wilderness.

It seems before we can learn anything anymore, we have to be shaken out of our preconceptions. In the wilderness, whether it be the mountain nor the desert you quickly realize that everything you knew is useless. From driving your car to balancing your check book, to the college degree you earned, out there they cannot do anything for you. So you begin to realize that you really don’t know that much and you realize your insignificance to the surrounding wilderness. Ivan rich wrote “the emptiness of the desert makes it possible to learn the almost impossible: the joyful acceptance of our uselessness.” And once you hit this point then you can began to learn about spirituality. This realization that you don’t know anything allows you to wonder about spirituality, because you would be foolish to think about day to day problems because they just don’t apply out there.
