Kasey Arnold...Split the Stick

Landscapes of the Sacred 72
Thomas writes in his Gospel “Split the stick and there is Jesus”. This phrase helps me to understand the concept of how the ordinary can mask the holy better than any other. A stick is one of nature’s most plain, common attributes. Nothing is special about a stick. But as soon as you split it, especially if the stick is still alive, it becomes complex, even beautiful. But more importantly than this phenomenon, the stick represents the power of the cross in which Jesus died. The stick as a mask reveals aspects of the holy. It was once just something common, yet it became a mode to unmask an extraordinary power greater than any other. It reveals and conceals truth, depending on however you would prefer to look at it.
