Kasey Arnold..Using Art to Conceal Art
I am extremely fascinated with the idea of using art to conceal art. How Olmstead designed Central Park, in New York City, intrigues me. He brought an Arcadia to the city with his pastoral vision of streams, boulders, and gardens. I was unaware that the majority of Central Park is unnatural. Each boulder and rock was specifically placed to enhance the beauty and naturalism of the park. Omlstead used man-made influences, such as bridges and fountains, with natural influences with the trees, ponds, and gardens. Juxtaposing these two influences causes the natural to become in some places a wilderness; the park is all man-made but the parts with architecture just become even more obvious. All is artificial. It is all art whether it looks natural or not.
